I found a small problem with the canopy fairing. It doesn't stick to the skin at the front, see the picture : I sanded the fairing back to find where it was sticking correctly, I needed to sand back 1/2". It seems my problems come from not sanding correctly the skin, see how it is shiny on the left. I will sand away all that is not sticking correctly and redo the front of the fairing. Today,I begun fabricating the forward canopy fairing. First operation is to cut some fiberglass strips. The strips' width is increasing slowly between each layer and there will be 6 or 7 layers. The picture is taken after the second layer has been laid. The fiberglass is laid dry and the wetted with the black epoxy. Once all the layer are laid, the peel ply is applied. It will take out the excess epoxy and help sanding. The fiberglass is not really symetrical on both sides. I think some sanding or filling should take care of that. First I uninstall the canopy from the fuselage. This will allow easier working on the canopy fairing and also allow working in the fuselage while the epoxy is curing. Then I sand and fill the epoxy laid out yesterday to get I good looking curve between the skin and the canopy. Working time on this subpart Today : 2h (Total : 108h) |

The seal done yesterday is already dry and lookng good even from the interior. So I begin working on the fairing. The first operation will be to spread some epoxy mixed with flox to smooth out the junction between the canopy and the skin. But before I have to mark the upper limit of the fairing on the canopy with electric tape, then protect the canopy, sand the canopy and the skin. Then the mixture is spreaded trying to get good looking shape. I used some black dye as the fairing will be visible from the cockpit and blend with instrument panel dashboard. I also primed the two brackets holding the canopy set screws and did some touch up paint. Working time on this subpart Today : 3h (Total : 133h) |
